Up from the dirt and tangled root,
Through helpless wrath and gnawing doubt,
Unbound, unstopped, and resolute
Through choking weed and charring drought,
I grow.
Through iron rock and brambled bush,
Through blinding fear and grim despair,
I search, I press, I stretch, I push
Through loneliness and too much wear.
By light I grasp. By dark I grope.
By day I think. By night I dream.
With crippling grief and shining hope
I laugh as clearly as I scream.
My life’s unique and unrehearsed.
I have one motor and one aim;
For I am gifted, I am cursed
By a powerful force I’ve yet to name.
Away, ahead, onward, I go
With open eyes and open mind
To where or what I do not know –
But then what matter what I find?
I grow.
